The curatorial intern for summer 2008 will be involved in the coordination and organization of the Kehinde Wiley, Senga Nengudi and Harlem Postcards exhibitions in addition to researching ongoing video projects. They will work directly with the curators and artists on catalogue production, exhibition installation, and documentation. The intern will also work closely with other departments at The Studio Museum, specifically with Public Relations, and Education and Public Programs, and gain an understanding of the balance between the public face of the museum and museum administration.
He/she will also correspond with and conduct research on artists, develop exhibition checklists, and begin exhibition proposals for the spring 2009 exhibition season. Other responsibilities will include: archiving past exhibition information; preparation for Artists-in-Residence selection process; reviewing artist submissions (other than AIR); research on artists.
The Curatorial intern should be motivated, organized, efficient, and have good communication skills. Applicants are expected to have a background in art, art history, museum studies and/or Africana studies. We also expect the Curatorial intern to be highly proficient in Microsoft Office software, Photoshop and adept with a PC; knowledge of foreign language is a plus.
General duties for the curatorial intern include maintaining archives and visual materials, reviewing slide submissions, updating artists' files, and conducting exhibition research. Curatorial staff will work with each intern individually on projects that have specific research or writing requirements, and expose him/her to the aspects of the curatorial process of greatest interest or opportunity.
