Positions from ARTSIntern

Corona Public Art Project Intern

Institution:

Queens Museum of Art

The Queens Museum of Art will commission four site-specific, temporary art projects in and around Corona Plaza, July - October, 2008. Three street celebrations will be held in the Plaza during that period which will draw attention to the public art projects and provide visitors with access to health and immigrant services providers in the area. Local performers, representing the cultural heritage of the Plaza's surrounding communities, will be invited to perform. The Intern will work with both the Curatorial Department and Public Events Department to assist with the planning and implementation of these public art projects and accompanying street celebrations. The intern will assist selected artists in fulfilling their projects, getting necessary permissions, and engaging community stakeholders to get their support for the work and to help promote the project. The student will develop a documentation and evaluation plan including an in-museum exhibition reflecting on the public art projects. This project is ideal for the student to learn the logistical and aesthetic challenges of developing successful and engaging public art projects, utilizing and developing the intern's communication, public relations, event production skills, and principle of socially collaborative art and roles of an institution as its facilitator.
The intern should have a background or familiarity in art education, art history, museum studies, and/or community relations as well as interest in engaging with a socio-culturally diverse population. Strong writing and communication skills are imperative, as the intern will be responsible for assisting staff in phone, letter, and email correspondence with artists, and government officials and agencies.
