The intern will assist in the design and implementation of an art camp scheduled this summer for children 7-12 years of age. The program is offered over the course of (2) 2-week sessions. The intern would work with and be supervised by the School and Family Educator and the School and Family Education Coordinator, and will be instrumental in mining the museum's permanent and changing exhibitions as the inspiration for tours and hands on workshops for camp participants. The intern will work closely with the School and Family Education and the School and Family Education Coordinator as they model inquiry based gallery tours, studio practice and appropriate work place demeanor. The intern will also help to plan trips to other institutions in Flushing Meadows Corona Park which will include art related activities such as life drawing and sculpting with clay. Students will learn about how to design developmentally appropriate projects and how to identify the materials that would best realize these projects. This is an ideal position for an education major.
The student needs to be responsible, self-motivated and have the ability to display a professional demeanor while working with both adults and children and should have an interest in working with children and/or art education. Working with children can provide a number of challenges and it is important for the student to be flexible and capable of finding solutions when unanticipated situations present themselves.
