Community and Government Relations Intern

El Museo del Barrio

The internship provides a great opportunity to gain experience and establish contacts in the arts, particularly among community based cultural and service organizations, as well as government offices in New York City. Benefits include free admission to NYC museums and to El Museo's programs and events.
  • Initially, the intern will research and identify and target community centers serving diverse audiences in NYC - families, youth and seniors. Intern will update and maintain our database of community organizations.
  • Establish and maintain a relationship with these organizations with the purpose of exploring their needs and interests.

  • Meet with community organization representatives regularly and market existing programs (exhibition tours/workshops, community festivals, family days) through presentations, mailings, email blasts, etc.
  • Coordinate the distribution of exhibition and programmatic promotional materials to El Museo's community outreach contacts (includes public offices, community centers, social service organizations, universities, etc.)
  • Coordinate and facilitate Museum's participation in community festivals, fairs, etc.
  • Work with the Community Relations Manager to develop and strengthen relationships and communication with elected officials and staff at all levels of government.
Qualifications: 
  • Strong background knowledge of Art History, Museum Studies, Library Science, Archival Management, Latin American and Caribbean history strongly preferred
  • Interest in museums, Latino/ Latin American/ Caribbean cultures, the visual arts, education, library/archives and humanities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work productively with diverse constituencies as well as government agencies.
  • Competent computer skills required. Must be comfortable with MS Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Must be willing to work with timelines and deadlines and demonstrate serious commitment to tasks and responsibilities
Desired Skills: 
  • Spoken and written proficiency in Spanish are a plus
  • Acquaintance with Latino service oriented and cultural community is a plus but not essential
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Must be a collegial team player who works well with staff and functions well independently.
  • Able to work among a diverse staff and museum audience
