Queens Museum of Art
The primary responsibility of this intern position will be to work with the Museum’s Manager of Family & After-School Programs to help assist classroom instruction of The QMA Big Time Summer Art Thing, the Museum’s summer art camp, as well as, to upkeeps and maintain a blog documenting the camps daily exploits.
The Big Time Summer Art Thing is a series of two-week art day camp sessions for children ages 7 - 11. Kids to dive into the world that is the Queens Museum for an adventure in art making, field trips and the perfect blend of learning and fun. Set against the unique backdrop of a funky contemporary art space that is steeped in the rich history of two World’s Fairs and the United Nations, children are provided the tools to explore our galleries and then let their imaginations soar in our art studios. Kids work on solo and group projects that lets their creativity flow, from the roots of traditional art practice to themes found in contemporary art today. Extracurricular activities make frequent use of Flushing Meadows Corona Park, as well as the nearby Queens Zoo and Queens Botanical Gardens. The intern will work intimately with two of city’s best teaching artists/museum educators as well as teens from the museum’s national award winning Queens Teens program. S/he will work with children in a dynamic environment and get a rich look at how an art museum and its Education Department function. Furthermore, the intern will be immersed in the environment of the organization that seeks to be the most community engaged museum in the nation.

Qualifications:
The intern should be experienced working in a cultural institution and/or summer camp, and experienced in working with and/or teaching children. They must display a strong interest in and knowledge of the arts, a professional demeanor while working with both adults and children, and be flexible problem solvers. They must be self-motivated and responsible, capable when working with technology, and able and eager to document a classroom experience with a digital camera. Experience with creating, maintaining, and updating blogs is necessary.
