The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University www.ansp.org
Public Experience Intern For more than 90 years, the habitat dioramas of the Academy of Natural Sciences have captivated visitors. Each of these windows to the wilderness provides an intimate encounter with animals in their natural habitats. Recently the Academy received funding to restore and reinterpret two of its key dioramas: the Takin, and the Lowland Gorilla.
The Public Experience Intern will play a key role in this reinterpretation project, working with Academy staff to research the history of the dioramas, the current state of the area of the world where the specimens were collected, and develop interpretive activities to engage the public. The goal of this project is to not only interpret the complex natural history of the animals in the dioramas, but also the unique Academy history of their collection. For instance, the Takin was collected by a gentleman who was asked to spy on China for the U.S. just before the country entered WWII!
The Intern will be able to explore the Academy's archives, develop intense research and investigative skills, and build educational and pedagogical knowledge.
