Program Description

The goal of the Arts Intern Program is to introduce college students from diverse backgrounds to careers in museum professions while providing cultural institutions with needed staffing during the summer season. In 2008, the program will begin on June 9 and end on August 8; a final report will be due from interns on August 13.

  • Applicants may be accepted from all areas of undergraduate study and need not have a background in the arts or prior internship experience.
  • The program seeks candidates with demonstrated financial need and especially encourages applicants from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Interns receive $3,300 for the nine-week internship, working a 35 hour week. The internship includes required weekly fieldtrips that offer "behind the scenes" tours of museums throughout New York City; this may require working late occasionally.
  • Interns are assigned specific, time-bound assignments and encouraged to take initiative, shaping their projects.
  • Internships are offered in a variety of museum departments, including administration, curatorial, education, publication, and public relations.
  • Interns must be able to demonstrate financial aid by having filed the United States Department of Education- Student Aid Report (SAR) and have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $6,000 or less for the most recent academic year. Interns must present their financial aid award letter from their college or university, as well as their SAR, at the time of their interview.
