1 - Serve as candid photographer, attending Museum events and activities, shooting and editing images for Museum publications and web use
2 - Work on scanning and editing images of works of art from the negative collection, to be added to the Museum's collections on web pages and our Luna image repository.
The first project will provide an opportunity to experience the challenges of composing shots on the fly, dealing with difficult lighting conditions, obtaining releases from parents, editing, and selecting usable images from the many obtained during a shoot. The second project will introduce the Intern to the detailed work of creating scans following standard specifications and working in a production environment. The Museum will benefit by obtaining quality images in two important areas that will be useful for the website, for future publications, and as archival documentation fo the Museum's collections and activities.
Candid photography: The intern will respond to shoot assignments and develop his/her own candid projects. Shoots may be during evening and weekend hours (First Saturdays are required). S/he will learn about requirements for obtaining releases for shots of children and will be responsible for obtaining them and adding them to the permissions files. Final images will be selected, edited, and named according to departmental standards.
Scanning: The intern will work on scanning negatives following departmental standards; edit and name the files; and assist in loading them into our imaging system. The intern will also join the posse on the Museum website and tag the objects s/he scanned.
These projects will give a photography student real-world experience in two important technical areas. The candid images from the first project will be a good addition to the student's portfolio; the second project will provide an introduction to professional standards and procedures in this area.
