Education Intern

American Folk Art Museum

The Education Intern will work on the following projects over the course of their internship:

A. Day Camp Program

The museum offers camp workshops and tours over the summer taught by our Summer Teen Docents. The Arts Intern will help prepare for this summer program by prepping supplies, helping to make demonstration projects, confirming groups for the week and overseeing the day to day preparation and implementation of these programs. The intern will go through an intensive two day training session along with teens on working with young audiences, and will do research on the collection and the field of museum education throughout the summer. By the middle of the internship the intern will be able to lead tours. The intern will also organize and lead a field trip for Summer Teen Docents at an offsite gallery; this will serve as an opportunity to apply teaching methodologies to a high school group.

B. Social Media Development

The museum is launching its first blog in early 2012. The intern will be responsible for content development, from initial research to the final editing process with the Publications team. These posts will provide more insight into the museum’s education programs, and will be an opportunity for the intern to put their own perspective into words and image.

The museum has a curated page on Kickstater.com (http://kck.st/oxr3OT) and the intern will contribute weekly to its content, choosing appropriate projects and writing a description for the concept and how it relates to the museum’s identity.

C. Family Program Development

The museum’s monthly family program is currently being restructured, and the intern will work with the education department to develop themes and art-making workshop ideas for future programming. This will be a chance to consider how to best use content from future exhibitions and formulate into developmentally appropriate in-gallery activities.

D. Weekly Programming Support

The museum’s weekly programs range from public gallery tours, to music programs and a newly launched craft evening: Make It Thursdays (http://bit.ly/v6JLRW) Based on the intern’s area of interest, s/he will assist in outreach, research, and general assistance in running the programs.
